Other Worlds- Making room for stories, 1st May 2012 to 27th May 2012 at The story Museum, Rochester house , Pembroke Street, Oxford (23 miles)
Other Worlds is an exhibition of intriguing new storytelling collaborations between pairs of writers and other creative artists, which turns an atmospheric, dilapidated building in the heart of historic Oxford into a giant storytelling compendium. The building was once Oxford’s main post office and telephone exchange and is soon to be transformed into The Story Museum. Before this takes place, Other Worlds is an introduction to the Museum’s potential and a celebration of the power of storytelling in many different forms, from the written word to sound, film, video - and even plants.
Twenty-five partnerships will put stories into the Museum, taking their cues from the evocative environment and creating intriguing and playful installations in 25 different spaces, with a surprise around every corner. Oxford is a magical city of stories, with authors such as Lewis Carroll, JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis and Philip Pullman taking us on wonderful imaginary journeys. Other Worlds continues the tradition.
Presented with support from Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts.
Opening times:
May 1 - 27th (inclusive) 2012: Thurs 1-7pm; Fri 1-7pm, Sat 10am - 5pm, Sun 10am - 4pm.
Admission:
£3 entry for adults and children. Under 2s free. Tickets on the door.

Wisdom for Today – a five week evening course in practical philosophy, 2nd May 2012 to 30th May 2012, 19:30 to 21:45 at Jubilee Centre, St Albans (17.3 miles)

Who said modern living was easy? We live life in the fast lane. We expect to be successful, happy, fulfilled. And we want it now.
Wisdom lies in understanding that true happiness comes from within. That compassion for others comes from understanding oneself. And that life can only truly be enjoyed in the present moment.
Wisdom itself is timeless. And never more relevant than today.

An evening course in practical, timeless wisdom.

Starts: Wednesday 2nd May 2012, 7.25-9.45pm Location: Jubilee Centre, Catherine Street, St Albans, AL3 5BU
Visit: www.PhilosophyInStAlbans.org
Enquiries and enrolments: philosophy.course@ntlworld.com Phone: 01727 867645
Course fees: £50 for the five week evening course
Taking a practical, rather than academic approach, the course aims to equip you with some simple practices that help you to develop greater stillness and concentration and to look more deeply. No previous experience needed - just an open mind and a willingness to try out, during the following week, the simple practices given in each class and to share what you've discovered with the group.

The School of Economic Science has been running Practical Philosophy courses in Hertfordshire for over thirty years. Hundreds of people from across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and beyond have enjoyed and benefited from these classes. We look forward to welcoming you.
